Hard Candy Silicone Molds & Ice Cube Trays

LEGO-Ice-Cube-tray-clarita-homeHere at Eduka Libre, we love silicone molds. They are a big part of our kitchen as we do a lot of baking and candy making. So we decided to break down a few things that most people are concerned about when it comes to silicone molds.

Is Silicone Safe for baking?

To understand that answer, it is important to recognize several often-confused terms:

  • Silicon– An all-natural chemical substance (atomic #14), that means it can’t be separated into smaller particles without splitting atoms. It will be the second most abundant element (after oxygen) so when it bonds with fresh air creates minerals called silicates (like quartz, olivine, micas, thomsonite, jadeite, in addition to prehnite)
  • Silica– A compound made of silicon and another factor. It is present in the skin in high amounts in addition to emerging research suggests it may be beneficial for health. I’ve mentioned it before when talking about diatomaceous earth and generate income consume it in organic form, but it isn’t similar to silicon or silicone bakeware in addition to isn’t relevant when talking about the safety of silicon.
  • Silicone– A synthetic polymer created by adding carbon and/or fresh air to silicone. It can exist as a solid, liquid or gel and it is often used in medical devices like pacemakers, articulation replacements and implants. It truly is generally considered safe for these uses and it is now used to help to make silicone bakeware.

When i am speaking about bakeware, i am referring to Silicone, your synthetic polymer. It is known as “FDA approved as a food-safe substance” and it is generally considered inert.

Sad to say, there hasn’t been a lot research on silicone bakeware as well as silicone
molds so even though there isn’t any evidence that it is harmful, there also isn’t much evidence that it is safe.

Testing your Silicon trays

clarita-home-lego-moulds-chocolate-ice-moldsThe testing that has become done on Silicone is usually on medical-grade silicone without fillers or additives in addition to at body or space temperature. These studies have established that silicone is protected at these temperatures in addition to long-term follow-up data support this.

Silicone’s safety at high temperatures is not adequately tested and that is where the controversy comes forth.

On paper, silicone bakeware is graded for temperatures below freezing or higher to almost 450°F etc paper it is protected.

Dangers of Silicone throughout Bakeware?

Again, any dangers are anecdotal at this time and not scientifically guaranteed, but that doesn’t actually prove the safety of silicone. Some potential hazards include:

  • The potential with regard to leaching at high temperature ranges
  • Fillers used in lower-quality silicon
  • Potential odor during high-temperature utilize
  • These dangers are not proven and therefore are reported only at hot temperature use, but still worthy of investigating further.

What Are The Benefits of Silicone Bakeware

One major advantage of silicone bakeware is that it is considered more non-stick than many traditional types of bakeware, especially with muffin cups and bread pans.

Silicone bake mats and also other silicone baking products tend to be easy to clean and prevent sticking when baking. The flexibility of silicon bakeware and molds makes it simply allows you to get things out of them and makes cleansing easier.

Silicone is additionally dishwasher safe, petroleum free and it is not supposed to diminish or scratch.

Our Favorite Silicone Molds

clarita-home-candy-moldsClarita Home makes a great set of silicone molds that are shaped like LEGO bricks and little men. It comes in a pack of 3, allowing you to make 12 bricks, 12 small figurines, and 1 large figurine at once. We love to use these to make chocolate for our kids, but they are also great for making ice, hard candy, soaps, candles, crayons, and a few other things.

What we love about them so much is how easy they are to use and clean. They are the perfect size and shape, and can brighten up your kitchen with their vibrant colors. Buy yourself a few sets so you can make a bunch of figurines at once if you’re decorating for a LEGO birthday party or baby shower.
